Pumping up water for horses
Image by National Library of Scotland
Indian Army cavalrymen pumping water, France, during World War I. In the foreground of this photograph are two Indian Army cavalrymen using a small hand pump to raise water out of a stream and through hoses up a slope. The stream can just be seen in the bottom right corner. At the top of the slope there are a number of horses which appear to be in a corral built of poles.
The provision of water for all the army horses and mules must often have been a severe difficulty. At times there were also shortages of hay or fodder.
