What a dull name for such a lovely insect. This is the male: females are more colourful.

No, he's not being strangled. His neck would probably fit between my pinky and ring finger with no harm..... We wanted to hold his head up to the Shub-Niggurath symbol!
While searching for a name for Beavis (which took over a week), one of the names Carolyn suggested was Shub-Niggaruth.
The reason she came up with this name was because the tabby "M" marking on Beavis didn't really look like an M. When she had named Misfit, she was thinking of names that start with M because of the tabby M.
So, at first, she thought the marking on Beavis' forehead looked like a Q. She tried to think of Q words, and thought of Quake. She didn't think "Quake" was a good name, so she decided to dig deeper.
After finding a website that described the monsters of Quake, she found a picture of Shub-Niggaruth (the final boss in Quake, and an H.P. Lovecraft god) and thought that *that* was what the mark on Beavis' forehead resembled.
She really wanted to name him Shub-Niggaruth after that, but Clint vetoed it.
Eventually we settled on Beavis, which Clint came up with.
Clint blogged about the lack of a name here: clintjcl.wordpress.com/2007/09/12/journal-new-kitten/
This picture shows us trying to compare the image of the quake monster Shub-Niggaruth with the marking on Beavis' head.
